Why Caring for Vulnerable Communities Defines a Truly Strong Republic

Every Republic Day, we honour the Constitution of India, a promise of justice, equality, and dignity for all. We remember the ideals that shaped our nation and celebrate the strength of our democracy.

But the true measure of a republic is not found in parades or speeches alone. It is found in how it treats those who are easiest to ignore: the homeless elderly, abandoned children, and injured animals who live at the margins of our society.

A truly strong republic is one that does not turn away from suffering.

The Republic’s Duty to Its Forgotten Elders and Children

In the heart of the city stands a shelter few people notice Dev Anand Divyang Ashram. It is home to 43 mentally and physically challenged children, all of whom were once abandoned on the streets with no one to claim them.

Its founder, Dev Anand, did not begin this journey with resources or recognition. After losing his wife, he faced cruelty instead of compassion, told that his grief was punishment, that he was cursed. Instead of breaking, he transformed his loss into purpose, creating a safe home for children who had been forgotten by both family and society.

A republic that claims to stand for dignity must ask itself:
What does dignity mean if children with disabilities are left without care?

Supporting such shelters is not charity, it is the republic fulfilling its moral responsibility.

Caring for Animals: A Measure of Our Constitutional Values

Eight years ago, the founders of Naman & Welfare Trust began with nothing more than a small first-aid kit and a promise to stop whenever they saw a dog in pain. There was no ambulance, no shelter, only the belief that every injured animal deserves help

In those early days, wounded dogs were treated on the very roads where they lay injured. Over time, the suffering became more severe road accident victims, paralysed dogs, abandoned pets who required months of care. What began as roadside aid evolved into organised rescue and long-term rehabilitation.

Today, through Aashiyana by Naman & Welfare Trust, that compassion has taken physical form a rescue team, ambulance service, and shelter that offers healing to accident victims, paralysed dogs, and animals abandoned when they become inconvenient.

As their work expanded, the team encountered another harsh reality: injured monkeys electrocuted on live wires, hit by vehicles, attacked by dogs, or orphaned after losing their mothers. Without specialised infrastructure, many of these lives remained beyond reach until tragedy forced change and strengthened their resolve to do more.

How a republic treats its animals who cannot vote, speak, or demand rights reveals the depth of its humanity.

A Republic Is Only as Strong as How It Treats Its Elders—One Man Is Proving That

At Asha Kiran Old Age Home, 62 abandoned elders have found safety after being left behind by their own families. Some were found lost at railway stations. Others were abandoned when they fell sick or grew old. Hochiminh Sastri has dedicated his life to giving them food, medicines, and dignity. But the home struggles daily to afford beds, medicines, and basic care. Your support can help these elders live their final years with respect.

Strength Lies in Care, Not Indifference

A republic is not made strong by power alone.
It is made strong by care.

When abandoned children are given shelter and dignity.
When injured animals are rescued instead of ignored.
When grief is transformed into service, and compassion into action.

These are not isolated acts of kindness. They are living expressions of the values our Constitution promised.

This Republic Day, Let Compassion Be Our Patriotism

Republic Day is not only a celebration of what we have achieved it is a reminder of what we still owe each other.

When we support campaigns like Dev Anand Divyang Ashram, Naman & Welfare Trust, and Aashiyana, we strengthen the republic at its roots by ensuring dignity reaches even those who live unseen.

Because a nation that protects its most vulnerable, its children, its elders, and its animals is not just a republic on paper.

It is a republic in spirit.
